SCHOOL'S LIAISON page.

PENE supports the following local and national initiatives in the field of schools liaison:

INPUT (INdustry Project: Understanding Technology). This is a series of hands-on design, make and test exercises based on real engineering problems. It was started in 1986 at the University of Durham and now operates nationally at a number of centres in England.

The North East and Cumbria continue to lead the field with a total of around 6300 pupils, aged 9 to 18, experiencing one or more INPUT projects during the 2001/02 school year. Delivery is mainly by Science and Engineering Ambassadors (formerly Neighbourhood Engineers) either in individual schools, teachers centres or the Discovery Museum.
INPUT National Director is John Allen ( jallen@btinternet.com ).

The Engineering Education Scheme (EES). This is a national scheme, forming part of the Royal Academy of Engineering's Continuum. It is aimed at first year sixth form students who work in teams of four (usually) with an engineer employed by a participating company on a real-life engineering project. The scheme includes a three-day residential session at the University of Newcastle and a Presentation and Assessment Day in March.
The Regional Director of EES in the North East is......
Bryan Lawrence ( bryanlawrence@hotmail.com ).

The Year in Industry (YinI) is another element in the Continuum in which gap-year students who have already secured a place on an engineering or computing degree course work with a company for a year on an engineering problem which the company is carrying out as part of its R&D programme.
The Regional Director of YinI in the North East is David Robinson ( d.robinson@yini.org.uk ).

Young Engineers is the national body which promotes young engineers clubs in schools throughout the UK. It is now also responsible, under franchise to the Engineering Technology Board (ETB), for the Young Engineers for Britain Competition (YEB).
The organiser for YEB in the North East is Geoff Clack.
The first prize in 2002 was £5000, and there were 13 other prizes of £1000 !
