Chairman's Report on ANPA 2004

Introduction

Evidence from ANPA 2004 is cited, in further support of the hypothesis 'Nilpotence - the key to the quantum Carnot engine evolution from Nothing, of the Universe, Life & Everything'; presented & published at the BCSCMsG International Symposium at CASYS 2003 (already the subject of an earlier chairman's report). The hypothesis took the form of two papers:-

a) Zenergy (the Universe as a Quantum thermodynamic Carnot Engine (QCE)) and
b) the key discovery, by Rowlands & Diaz (R&D), to understanding universal quantum information processing, of its nilpotent computational rewrite system (ncrs) so to define its grammar/semantics;
so that it can be inferred that QCE1 & ncrs are corresponding equivalent physical and mathematical descriptions concerning respectively entropy as an information metric. In particular these showed (together with other evidence) that the mathematical condition nilpotence leads to the derivation/description:-
c) of quantum physics in the form of the nilpotent generalization of Dirac famous equation as discovered by Rowlands & Cullerne (R&C)2 (which resolves the dichotomy between Einstein's General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics!) and
d) of quantum holographic information processing based on the 3D Heisenberg nilpotent Lie group as discovered by Schempp3 (a QCE process which ensures such information processing is canonically labeled so as to constitute computation; an example of which is the worldwide medical use of magnetic resonance imaging.), (c)&(d) specify the required division of the nilpotent quantum state space into its Clifford fermionic & the Lie bosonic parts, where the nilpotent initial state i.e. the origin of the Universe, its quantum preparation:-
e) is the empty set of both of 3+1 space time and Standard Model elementary particle matter, from which both consequently emerge as the result of symmetry breaking (as shown by R&C (c)),
f) has an endless evolution since the result of each irreversible QCE cycle as quantum measurement is the quantum preparation for the next (a), and
g) possesses the spatial & temporal quantum coherence necessary for quantum holographic full wave front reconstruction, in this case (d), its own, in confirmation of R&C's explanation2 as to why the Universe has the dimensions of 3+1 space-time, in addition to a proper time consequent upon its irreversible QCE thermodynamic evolution.

This new ANPA 2004 evidence in further confirmation of the postulate, is as follows:- h) It is noted that R&D's mathematical derivation (b) satisfies J.A. Wheeler's prescient hypotheses of "the Meaning Circuit" and of "(the derivation of) Physical law without Law"4,5 That is to say, it predicts that "Wheeler's 'Law without Law' " takes the form (c) in relation to the nilpotent quantum cosmology of the Universe as Quantum Carnot Engine, where (a) its Zenergy, the quantum coherent phaseonium1 of dark energy "fuels" its physical structure, so as to ensure :-
i) that this structure includes not only that of 3+1 space-time and "standard model" elementary particle matter (R&C), but potentially that too of living systems as QCEs, based on the novel understanding of DNA/RNA as a nilpotent molecular chemical computational rewrite system. In this rewrite understanding, RNA serves the quantum computational rewrite system function of introducing a new chemical structure or a hierarchical chemistry, whenever the RNA base pairing A = U replaces that in DNA of A = T , such that U symbolizes a new entire alphabet, sub-alphabet, or simply a single character of that new family of chemical structures or chemistry. This provides a further confirmation of the already published research in the BCSCMsG CASYS archive, that DNA is a quantum 'programming' language with a universal grammar defining its meaning, akin to contextual human natural languages6. Thus the human 'sequential' faculties of speech, hearing and thought can be similarly hypothesized to constitute quantum computational rewrite systems, with a supra-genetic relationship to the genetic code. This confirms De Duve's7 contention that the function of genetic code base pairing governs whole of biological structure & information transfer throughout the entire biosphere. For now, the nilpotent quantum computational rewrite system definition of the two DNA base pairings A = T, and G≡C is that of a nilpotent rewrite system's two minimal productions consisting respectively of :- a quantum create operation (as described above) and, a corresponding annihilation operation of natural selection (think of it , for example, as a proofreading) which checks that any new chemical structure/hierarchical chemistry is compatible with that already selected, and if not, annihilates it until a compatible alternative is found or results in the abortion of the entire rewrite process. In particular, this is a means of ensuring that living systems are themselves quantum coherent systems/QCE's, endowed with quantum computational evolutionary advantage over the corresponding class of Classical thermo-dynamic Carnot Engines (CCEs), which QCEs include. A distinction, which can, for example, be used to define the term Zombie ie CCE, as machines without minds or consciousness, in such way as to rule out the often contentious assertion in consciousness research that there is no difference. And in particular this distinction & the above arguments assert that the self repair/'the remaking whole of the individual organism' ie its health, is geared to each individual's unique genetic code, as, for example, has always been the philosophical basis and practice in the therapies of complementary medicine,
j) A theme taken up by Schjelderup, from his extensive and successful medical practice of acupuncture. He pointed to the remarkable fact that the basis of the biological healing system has been little studied by the orthodox Western medical research community. This despite the fact that humans and indeed all complex organisms could never exist without this ability to heal themselves, which is the principal vehicle of concern to complementary and Eastern medical practice. Data was then presented in support of his case that both acupuncture and the human healing system work on a bio-holographic basis, in agreement with (a) and (b).

Summary

These QCE descriptions all further confirm :-
k) a nilpotent global thermodynamic quantum evolution of the Universe (a) (in accord with the First, Second and Third Laws of Thermodyamics)a, where the result of each irreversible QCE cycle as quantum measurement is the quantum preparation for the next, so that
l) quantum mechanics is ultimately a unique global thermodynamic irreversible process, specified by Boltzmann's constant k, where E = kT and T, the temperature, is a global measure, as it is in relation to the calorimetry of the Big Bang (ie the Universe itself).
m) Indeed the most important ANPA paper by Pierre Noyes (an ANPA founder) and James Lindsay, presented actual analyses of this calorimetry as it concerns the latest cosmologically observed background energy (COBE) which shows that it - COBE - can be accounted for by
(i) a steady change with reference to a fixed background and
(ii) the assumption that the cosmos is quantum coherent, so that COBE would corresponds to the process called "quantum state holography8" and the Universe could indeed be modeled as a QCE.

It would therefore seem with hindsight that Boltzmann pre-empted Planck as the first discoverer of modern quantum physics. For this new global thermodynamic explanation, the QCE, resolves the paradox which caused him to take his own life! For QCE behaviour is that of an entire quantum field/system and so represents a function of every point of the energy surface corresponding to the energy of the system, a fact that underlies statistical mechanics and for which until now there was no entirely satisfactory explanation.

Other papers were

n) that of Emeritus Professor Clive Kilmister (a ANPA founder) on the mathematics of calculating the electromagnetic fine structure constant from the discrete process model of quantum physics known as the Combinatorial Hierarchy (CH), which has been ANPA's principal remit throughout its 25 year existence. Comparison with the empirical experimentally measured value, shows very close agreement as such difference as there is, falls within current experimental error.
o) Ted Bastin stated his latest thoughts of why the CH process model of discrete quantum physics was necessary to the modern scientific understanding of quantum theory A thesis which it was agreed later during informal discussions between Louis Kauffman, Peter Marcer, and Peter Rowlands for example, could now be explained on the basis that the CH is in fact itself a nilpotent computational rewrite system and thus with hindsight a recognizable process model for quantum mechanics expressed in terms of the language of the two productions/symbols 0 and 1 ; (other examples of such rewrite systems are :- Spenser-Brown's laws of form often used by Kauffman ; John Conway's generation of the surreal number fields 9 which mathematically exhibits the unique field automorphic birthordering propertyl that the QCE provides quantum physically in relation to the Second Law, already referred to above. It is of particular interest because Clive Kilmister used the John Conway generator many years ago, in his Brouwerian Foundation of the CH; and finally that of Dirac's now famous quantum mechanical notation with its two productions, bra & ket 10.
p) These hypotheses were further legitimized by Michael Heather in his later presentation, when he put the necessary mathematical criteria for any description of the cosmos into the foundational context of modern category theory. His explanation of how nilpotent computational rewrite systems in general and the CH in particular meet these criteria, included those that have to be met if the fine structure constant is to be calculable from the CH as reported in (i) above. That is, they must necessarily define a grammar called by ANPA, discriminant closure, able among other actions, to turn the symbols 0 & 1 into numerical values in relation to the quantum algorithm/program that ANPA very appropriately called Program Universe.
q) Peter Rowlands then gave a paper on how the formalization of the generalized nilpotent Dirac equation (which, as stated above, can be derived from the Rowlands & Diaz nilpotent computational rewrite system where the rewrite rules or productions allow new symbols to be added to the initial alphabet, enabling it to rewrite itself) fits in a truly marvelous way with the understanding of the concept of the quantum mechanical vacuum, as a fixed empty reference frame. It is that such vacuum descriptions by complementary pairs of nilpotent operators specify the action and reaction of the quantum system, object or elementary particle acting on the universe and vice verse, so that together the two not only result in an nilpotent equilibrium or "no-thing", but are such that the inertial properties of matter are explained.
r) Pierre Noyes' talk concerned physical eschatology. This concerned the very critical issue (even if many current human policies and actions are subject to unexpected and radical about turns) of whether mankind's future survival and that of life itself on the planet Earth is already in question in the next fifty years, as many factors would now indicate to be the case. It is a case that man's radical abuse of the self-governing Biosphere as a QCE would readily support; for while Western Governments readily accept the economic necessity to prevent the disaster of overheating the world economy i.e. high inflation, the evidence for the overheating of the Biosphere i.e. global warming, has until now been largely ignored or simply given lip service even though it could threaten the survival of mankind itself, and the facts indicated is already doing so!
s) Mike Manthey continued his prescient very early (1980s) conception that quantum physics is synonymous with "parallelism in computation" which he currently (1990s) describes via the two productions of co-occurrence and co-exclusion. This has led him to a radically new concept in quantum computation, the Phase Web paradigm, described as space-like to distinguish it from Turing and Von Neumann architectures, which are time-like. Such a phase web was shown to consist of a lattice ladder of "phase gates" where co-occurrence and co- exclusion operations take place. It posits the hypothesis that the phase web is itself a "space-like" minimal computational rewrite system, which describes novel technology, able, for example, to encode and decode holographic information by phase, and transmit it with enormous efficiency. For example, of a 3D view from an encoding web situated on Mars, to viewers thus able to imagine themselves on Mars, while inside the decoding web on Earth, and finally of both :-
t) Ord and Kauffman. They demonstrated mathematical extensions of discrete quantum physics which were in agreement with their standard counterparts, but which as discrete descriptions avoid the counterpart's problems of renormalization, ie infinities. However these problems are also avoided if the counterpart is, as proposed here, nilpotent, since then the total global energy of the Universe as a whole is zero. Indeed their mathematics showed this, too, because their extensions describe both the discrete and the standard solution simultaneously, and in Ord's case, the solution's trajectories linked together perfectly so as to behave as a single united whole. That is to say, as Feynman first point out for electrons, they behave exactly as if there was only one single trajectory or electron, ie hololistically.

Abstract To incorporate thermodynamic, quantum and classical dynamical laws, the Universe is treated as a quantum Carnot engine (QCE) or single heat bath in which the ensemble of elementary particles retains a small amount of quantum coherence, so as to constitute new states of matter known as "phaseonia", the first being its Zenergy, the empty ensemble of dark energy. How Zenergy fuels the natural structure of the Universe, is then in complete accord with the existence of 3+1 space-time, the known elementary particles quantizations and galactic structure. Similar QCE explanations of the natural structure of DNA, and of the human brain/mind as a conscious engine are given. Thus 'the Universe, life, consciousness and everything' may derive its entire structure from this difference between classical and quantum mechanical thermodynamic machines.

Abstract Assuming the nilpotent Dirac equation in the form outlined by Rowlands (elsewhere in the CASYS AIP proceedings and published in the on-line arXiv:quant-ph at xxx.lanl.gov) this paper introduces a computational path to it using the concept of a rewrite (or production) system. The system differs from traditional rewrite systems in that the rewrite rules allow new symbols to be added to the initial alphabet; Thus the system can start with just one symbol, representing "nothing", and with two fundamental rules; create a process which adds news symbols, and conserve a process that examines the effect of any new symbol on those that currently exist With each step a new sub-alphabet of an infinite universal alphabet is created The system may be implemented in an iterative way, such that a sequence of properties is required of the emerging sub-alphabets. We show that one such sequential path proceeds from "nothing" through conjugation, complexification, and dimensionalisation to a sort of steady state in which no fundamentally new symbol is needed. At this stage the alphabet is congruent with the nilpotent Dirac equation in the form described above. It is suggested that many ways of implementing the computational path exist and these do not need to be at all complicated.
